"The room alone is worth visiting"
EDMONTON -- Patrick and Doris Saurette’s new restaurant, The Marc, is now open. Patrick, formerly the general manager at il Portico, decided to come back downtown for his new venture, at 9940 106th St. (780-429-2828).
The Marc is a French bistro with a small, but precisely perfect menu, and surprisingly low prices. Steak Frites with Truffle Aioli is the most expensive item at $23. I enjoyed the cassoulet, rich with pork belly, sausage and a stew of lingot beans for $18. There’s a daily fish dish as well.
Desserts change often, but are always lead by a classic creme caramel. I had a rich chocolate cake with salted caramel walnuts and my companion was more than pleased with the lemon meringue pie.
The room alone is worth visiting. It’s soothing in shades of white, taupe, and black, with sparkling pendant lights and a bar constructed with marble reclaimed from the CN Tower. It’s the perfect place to pop in for a glass of wine and an order of mussels after work as it has a great, wind-down feel. Lots of great ex-staffers from il Portico are also on the premises, a comforting touch.
